Claudia Gusman grew up in McLean and Falls Church, VA. Starting off as a choir kid and then pursuing percussion 8th grade onward, she always found her sense of belonging in music—and now in teaching music. Her journey in college began in a different undergrad major. She took lessons with Ben Tufts during 2021-22 in the process of changing her major to a BM in Music Education. Claudia is in her fourth year of obtaining her degree at George Mason University. She is currently the principal percussionist of the Symphonic Band, a percussionist in the Wind Symphony, and works as a music librarian for the School of Music. Honoring her choral origins, she is also the co-music director of Noteworthy, an a cappella group on campus.
In connection to Vanguard, Claudia has just finished the first ever season directing the Vanguard Winter Percussion Ensemble. Projected to graduate in Spring 2026, she intends to teach and connect with students of all ages and is open to obtaining all kinds of experiences, whether that be in elementary general music, choir, middle school band, high school band, and/or percussion ensemble directing.
WINTER PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE FAQs

Winter Percussion Ensemble is $350 per student. A deposit of half the class fee is charged at signup, and the remainder is billed on the first day of class.

Winter Percussion Ensemble runs every Saturday from January 10th through March 21st, 2026 from 9:30AM - 12PM.

The recommended age is 10-14. All students will need a referral from their current school band director or private instructor.
